Dear Irish Society and Na Fianna Members,
First just a quick reminder about our annual Carol Evening on Tuesday December 13 – for more see here!

Now – are you interested in learning how to speak “as Gaeilge”? If yes, then the good news is that it will be possible to learn Irish here in the desert from January 2012 on. Our resident member and Gaeilge expert Katie Nolan will be conducting classes on a weekly basis from January 2012 on. The classes will be held every Monday night in the Citi Golf Club on 19th Street @ 7pm.
Should you wish to enroll in the class then please drop Katie an email on katienolan1@hotmail.com or contact her on 050 5429250 and inform her of your interest. If you are interested then please contact Katie before the Christmas holidays so she can plan accordingly. If you could also inform her of your level that would also be most beneficial to her!
Katie hopes to begin classes on Monday 9th January. A fee will apply for the course. This amount will be decided over the coming weeks when Katie has an indication of interest.
Classes can also be organized for children. If you have children and wish to have them learn the beautiful language then please also inform Katie.
We look forward to hearing from you soon,
Nollaig Shona,
Trevor Buckley

Dear Irish Society and Na Fianna Members,
With the Festive Season around the corner Abu Dhabi Irish Society and Na Fianna have decided it’s time to Give a Little – Give the Gift of a brighter Christmas!
Every Christmas, Saint Vincent De Paul runs a Christmas campaign in Ireland “SVP at Christmas” to try to ensure that everyone gets the Christmas treats that we all love to have during the festive period. This year, the Irish Society and Na Fianna are hoping to run the appeal from the UAE and give to those less fortunate at home. Please double click on the below link for more information. There are three ways you can give the gift of a Brighter Christmas and create a little Magic:
Donate a Toy of Your Choice
Buy a toy: the toy must be NEW
Do not wrap the toy – we’ll only have to unwrap it and we don’t want to waste paper!
The Shoe Box Appeal
Find & Wrap an Empty Shoe Box
Decide if your gift is for a Girl or Boy, a lady or a Gentleman. Indicate this by labeling the box.
Fill your shoe box with gifts appropriate for the person your gift is for.
Food Hampers
Support the SVP Christmas Food Appeal
Donate Money to enable us to purchase non-perishable festive foods
By these donations you will be helping families and Individuals enjoy a special Christmas meal.
Any donations will be very much appreciated and will be given to a worthy cause.
We have organized the drop offs and donation times to coincide with all your Irish Society events over the festive period . Just bring along the toy, gift and/or money to one of the following venues.
Collection Points will be set up Across Abu Dhabi over the next week as below:
- Friday 9th December – City Golf Club -Irish Society Golf Outing 5-9pm
- Saturday 10th December – Children’s Christmas Party, Crown Plaza Hamdan Street 4-7pm
- Sunday 11th December- Zayed Sports City- 7-8.30pm.

In the spririt of Christmas we have decided to make the event a charity one. The cost of the round will be around 160-180 AED per person, we are waiting for final pricing confirmation from the Golf Club. Please note the price includes a small donation towards the Irish Charirty ‘Saint Vincent de Paul’. Should numbers permit we also hope to hold a small raffle in the aftermath of the golf where all proceeds will go to the charity.
Let’s all get out on the course for one last time before we break up for the holidays and support a worthy cause while doing so.

Ballymore ladies Anita Mc Nerney and Barbara McElvaney triumphed in Dubai this weekend, Friday 30 September. Both play for Abu Dhabi Na Fianna ladies gaelic team and the Dubai tournament was the first round of games in the Middle East League.
As Dubai temperatures soared to forty degrees, Abu Dhabi Na Fianna defeated Sharjah to reach the final. Na Fianna were under pressure against Dubai Celts in the first half of the game before making a dramatic comeback in the second half. With the help of centre back Anita and midfealder Barbara who scored three points, the team defeated Dubai. The final score was Abu Dhabi Na Fianna Ladies 1-04 and Dubai Celts Ladies 1-02
As team captain Anita, a daughter of Mary and Pat Mc Nerney, accepted the cup on behalf of her teammates, saying: “I’m delighted, it’s a fantastic start to the season”.
Barbara, a daughter of Sean and Mary McElvaney, was named Player of the Tournament and presented with the trophy by Paddy Darcy, chairman of the Dubai club. Barbara said: “It’s brilliant, we lost out on a lot recently at home. Ballymore ladies lost by a point in the county final and Ballymore mens’ team lost by a point in the intermediate county final so it’s about time we got some silver for Ballymore”.
Coincidently the referee also hails from Longford. Fergal Kelly who plays for Ballymahon, travelled to Dubai for the weekend to take part in the event. He was praised by the girls for his objective refereeing on the day. Barbara said “he is a high quality referee. He let the game flow and was very fair at the same time.”
Other Longford GAA players who took part in the tournament included; Padraig Brady from Ballinalee, who is a former player for Sean Connolly’s Cub, Leonard McCoppin who played for Saint Gratons Club and Pat Finn who played for Ballymahon. Leonard’s team, Abu Dhabi Na Fianna Men’s B Team, also came out on top. Leonard made some fantastic saves for his side who beat Bahrain, Oman and then Dubai Dingos in the final. The final score was Abu Dhabi Na Fianna Men’s B Team 2-07, Dubai Men’s B Team 1-03.
Padraig said “today was a great day out for the Longford contingent”. The players are looking forward to the next GAA tournament which takes place in Bahrain in November.”
